Sustainable Innovations on the Journey to Net Zero with Paul Aldrige
Published on 01 Apr 2025

In episode 7 of The Green Perspective Podcast hosts Lily and Steph have an enlightening conversation with Paul Aldridge, the Group Sustainability Director at WJ Group. This UK-based road marking and highway safety business is making waves with its commitment to sustainability.

A Sustainable Step Forward

Paul Aldridge introduces WJ Group's biogenic binder systems, which are derived from tree sap, a by-product of the paper industry. These systems contribute towards a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of their products. By sourcing materials that would otherwise go to waste, WJ Group exemplifies the principles of the circular economy, turning by-products into valuable resources for sustainable infrastructure.

Balancing Commercial Forestry and Biodiversity

WJ Group's commitment to sustainability is evident in it’s land management practices. Paul highlights how 55% of their land is dedicated to commercial forestry while 45% remains as natural woodland. This balance not only supports biodiversity but also aligns with landscape design principles, enhancing recreational opportunities and improving air quality for surrounding communities. It's a delicate equilibrium that proves sustainability and business can coexist harmoniously.

Economic Realities of Carbon Reduction

Paul also talks to Lily and Steph about the economic challenges associated with carbon reduction initiatives. He acknowledges that while transitioning to sustainable practices, such as electric vehicles, may be costly, the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial expenses. He emphasises the need for bravery and innovation to push these initiatives forward, encouraging both businesses and individuals to take bold steps towards a greener future.

Understanding PAS 2080 Certification

They also discuss the PAS 2080 certification, a collaborative standard in carbon management for infrastructure. Paul explains it’s importance, noting that it works best when client-led. PAS 2080 divides the supply chain into segments, involving clients, designers, contractors, and suppliers. This segmentation facilitates discussions about low-carbon solutions, highlighting the crucial role each participant plays in carbon reduction, regardless of their size.

Leadership and Continuous Learning in Sustainability

Paul’s personal and professional commitment to sustainability shines through as he discusses the importance of staying informed and contextualising new information. He advises leaders to cultivate an interest in sustainability, stressing the value of ongoing education and awareness through newsletters and media.

The Impact of Severe Weather and Climate Change

Reflecting on a significant rainfall event in Bedfordshire, Paul underscores the growing impact of severe weather events, potentially linked to climate change. He emphasises the necessity for businesses to adapt to these changes to remain competitive, reinforcing the urgency of sustainable practices in an evolving climate landscape.

Pioneering Sustainability at Work

At work Paul promotes sustainability by encouraging his team to enhance their environmental skills. The company offers a leasing scheme for electric vehicles, emphasising economic sustainability. This initiative aligns with their broader objective of integrating sustainability into all business operations. Paul also shares WJ Group's use of life cycle analysis to assess the carbon footprint of their products. By manufacturing their own materials, they effectively manage supply chain sustainability. Notably, the shift to biogenic binder systems has led to an 80% reduction in embodied carbon, equating to over 20,000 tonnes of CO2e annually. This strategic shift underscores their commitment to innovative, low-carbon solutions.

Corporate Responsibility and Carbon Sequestration

They also discuss corporate responsibility and the goal of decarbonisation. WJ Group's efforts, including the planting of 327,000 trees in Scotland for long-term carbon sequestration, reflect their dedication to removing more carbon than they emit.

We hope this episode inspires listeners to consider the impact of their choices and the importance of innovation in driving a greener future.
