A huge thanks to our Chevron Green Consultancy team, who provided their observations over the past few weeks while undertaking arboricultural and environmental surveys across England.
If you're heading into nature as part of your work (or just for fun), here's a roundup of what you can expect right now:
🌳 We've been doing some tree re-inspections on the A303, where a few trees had been identified during a detailed tree condition survey in 2022 as needing re-inspection. As with our observations from the M4 last month, many of these trees marked as needing to be reassessed were due to drought stress after the very hot summer we had in 2022, and we were delighted to find they had all made an almost complete recovery, so required no further work. Trees can be very resilient!
🌲 However, the pines are still suffering and dying.
🍎 The fruit seems to be very abundant this year, with good crops of berries and nuts.
💚 Blackberries are out (next time you're out for a walk, take a tub to collect some; they're delicious made into jam, crumble or added to cakes and porridge).
🌹 Understorey has had good growth, perhaps due to late canopy closure, with brambles and roses growing well.
🌿 There is still an excellent bright green coverage; nothing is turning autumnal yet. We would expect a dirty green covering by now, but the general green colour is still bright.
🦋 The following butterflies were spotted in Kent recently: small white, large white, speckled wood, small tortoiseshell and meadow brown.
🦎 Also spotted in Kent: lots of slow worms and common lizards.
🐛 In Bedfordshire, we spotted the following moths and butterflies: cinnabar moth, meadow brown and small white.
Is this aligned with what you've been seeing while working outside recently?
