This week we're highlighting episode 10 of The Green Perspective podcast. In this episode, we explore Chevron’s cutting-edge innovations in sustainability and ecological conservation. Co-hosts Steph Berwick, and Lily Clarke discussed the transformative technologies and practices deployed by Chevron Green Services for a greener future. Let's look at these innovations in more detail.

Revolutionary Use of Infrared Cameras for Bat Surveys

Lily Clarke, co-host of The Green Perspective Podcast and dedicated ecologist, highlighted the groundbreaking use of infrared cameras in bat surveys. Recent changes in bat conservation guidelines necessitated these advances, making traditional methods obsolete. Infrared cameras offer multiple advantages, including time-efficient and cost-effective surveys, which ensure precise data collection. Minimal onsite duration translates directly into reduced conflicts with other workers and clearer, more reliable communication with clients.

Beyond bats, these cameras have broader applications. For instance, thermal imaging plugins are increasingly recommended for nesting bird checks. Despite being less common, their utility and ability to engage other stakeholders in environmental conservation make them invaluable. By reducing onsite time, these technologies considerably lessen carbon emissions, enhancing operational efficiency and contributing significantly to sustainability goals.

Carbon Management

Chevron’s commitment to sustainability is exemplified by their achievement of the PAS 2080 accreditation. This international standard for carbon management in infrastructure underscores Chevron’s resolve to minimise carbon footprints across project lifecycles, from design through to end-of-life stages. The accreditation aligns carbon reduction with procurement and decision-making processes, fostering collaboration across the supply chain. Chevron aims for net-zero emissions in highways by 2040 for maintenance and construction, extending to road users by 2050.

Reducing Emissions

One of the flagship innovations discussed in the podcast is the IntelliTag—a digital tracking system for traffic signs. This technology allows for event-based maintenance rather than routine checks, a shift that has tangible sustainability benefits. Specifically, using IntelliTag on smart motorway projects has cut maintenance emissions by an impressive 38%, saving 350 tons of carbon, and offering over £100,000 in social value.

The IntelliTag system is a testament to how smart innovations can streamline operations, reduce costs, and meet environmental objectives. This aligns perfectly with Chevron’s broader goals of achieving sustainability through practical, scalable solutions.

Another remarkable innovation from Chevron is the Enhanced Mobile Carriageway Closure (EMCC) technique. This practice not only augments safety but extends working hours for resurfacing projects. By increasing efficiency, EMCC indirectly reduces carbon emissions by 25% in such schemes. This method underscores how operational enhancements can align closely with environmental conservation efforts.

The Importance of Sustainability Education

Steph and Lily also discuss the critical need for sustainability education. She pointed out the dearth of comprehensive environmental education in school curricula, leading to a low awareness among younger populations. Incorporating sustainability teachings can empower future generations to take actionable steps towards environmental conservation. Encouraging personal sustainability efforts, such as using public transport or buying locally sourced food, can collectively lead to broader ecological benefits.

This first series of the podcast has aimed to highlight some of the amazing innovations Chevron, businesses and leaders are making steps towards a sustainable and ecologically balanced future. From utilising infrared cameras for wildlife surveys to achieving PAS 2080 accreditation, Chevron Green Services are showing how integrating smart technologies in operational practices can lead to substantial environmental and social benefits.
